| 426 | A seaman's chest containing journals, photographs, ships' records and other personal effects of Edward Leigh Carte RN, 1838-1911 Born on 26 July 1838 at Barton on Humber, Lincolnshire, Edward Leigh Carte was educated in Hamburg and Antwerp until 1853, when he was sent to Scotland to learn his trade of engineering. He first went to sea in a ship belonging to his uncle, Joseph Gee of Hull. Following his uncle's death he entered the Royal Navy in 1861 as Assistant Engineer and was promoted to Engineer on 24 October 1868. His effects include detailed journals of service on HMS Bristol (1867), HMS Greyhound (1867 to 1869) and HMS Ready (1878 to 1882), with deployments off West Africa and South America and in the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean. During his career Carte served in at least twelve other ships, including HMS Mersey (1869 to 1870, at Queenstown) and HMS Iron Duke (1871 to 1874, during which time Carte was the engineer responsible for commissioning the engines and his effects include a hand written record of the sea trials off Plymouth in January and February 1871). Carte married Sarah (Sally) Flunder of Sheerness on 3 June 1863 at Minster Sheppey, Kent. He died on 23 June 1911 at Southampton. £300-500 | Nil |
