A bit more about us

There has been an auction house at Parsons Street in Banbury since the early seventies, initially trading as Buckell and Ballard Fine Art under the direction of the late Tim Holloway, who subsequently bought the business himself and continued trading under his own name. In 2001, Nick Williams, bought the business from Tim with a commitment to providing a specialised auction service for the middle market offering impartial advice to those wanting to sell. In 2015 Holloway’s was acquired by Charles Ross Auctioneers Ltd, and continues to provide the same standard of service on which our reputation has been built.

James Lees

I have spent all of my working life within one sector or another of the antiques business. My parents were dealers in the 1960s and 1970s and I spent my early days in the salesrooms of the Midlands.

I initially worked for a long established auction house from the age of fifteen but left to pursue a career in furniture conservation. Leaving home at 17, I took a trainee position with a well-known firm of conservators. During my years working in this position I came to realise that my heart lay back at my beginnings in the auction world with its quirky, unpredictable nature where no two days are the same. I left conservation and re-joined the auction world working for a number of auction houses.

As my experience lay mainly in period furniture and wooden artefacts I embarked on a ten year study of ceramics and all of the other disciplines an auctioneer can be expected to have an informed opinion about. During this time I developed a growing interest in oriental ceramics and all things esoteric (the whacky stuff that everyone usually runs a mile from!).

Jasper Marsh

I have spent many years working as an auctioneer and valuer in provincial auction rooms in the Midlands before joining Charles Ross at the start of 2008 and rejoining Holloway’s in 2015.  I have a wide ranging, general knowledge of fine art and antiques developed from my first days as a porter at Holloway’s, increasing my experience to become an auctioneer, conducting my first sale in 1994.

I am delighted to return to Holloway’s and to be part of a great team that delivers exceptional service to their clients.

Jenny Knott

I started my career at Bonhams in London joining Holloway’s in 2002 as their jewellery specialist consultant. For the past 20 years I have been freelance, working on projects in collaboration with the Goldsmith’s company, The Royal Collection and the Rothschild Trust amongst others. My particular area of specialty is cufflinks and gentleman’s accessories and I have lectured on this subject in the UK and America.

I am delighted to have a continued involvement in the auction world and Holloway’s in particular. Even after so many years it is still thrilling to see an unusual piece generating a bidding frenzy in the saleroom. I also love the fact that exciting discoveries can be made whatever the value of an item and I often find myself piecing together family histories. For example, I might say, “This has French gold marks” and the client will exclaim, “Oh yes, my grandfather worked in Paris in the 1920s, he must have bought it there for my grandmother”. This is one job where you will never have a groundhog day!

Jenny is available on certain Thursdays at the saleroom to give free verbal jewellery appraisals for items you are considering selling and can provide written valuation certificates for insurance and probate purposes (£25 +VAT for the first item and £15 +VAT for subsequent items). Please call 01295 817777 to book an appointment.

Rebecca Mawle

I am responsible for the day to day running of Holloway's ensuring that the auctions run smoothly and that we are continually improving our services to ensure we are doing the best for our customers.

I joined the team in 2012 from professional services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) where I was Marketing & Communications Manager. I am also a graduate from the Solent University's Fine Arts Valuation degree and have a professional qualification from the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

It’s great to work in such an interesting and dedicated team as well as having the opportunity to see some amazing objects. I am always excited to see what the front cover for our Antiques and Fine Art sale catalogue will turn out to be.

Julia Webb

I joined the team at Holloway's in October 2006 after sending a rather impulsive and crazy letter of application which amazingly led to an interview and job offer, having read Holloway’s advert for an accounts administrator in the local paper on a Sunday morning whilst enjoying jam and toast! I have no regrets.

Throughout my working life, I have been employed by banks, building societies and the local council. My work has ranged from cashiering, administration, offering mortgages to council tax and housing benefit advice. In my spare time I have been treasurer of my local community association for the last 15+ years. My work at Holloway’s involves processing buyer and vendor accounts and maintaining the business bank accounts.

I particularly enjoy the variation of my tasks and the fact that I also experience interaction with the public as part of my work. I am a '50 something' wife, mother and grandmother who hopes to remain part of the Holloway's team through to retirement, a good number of years ahead!

What I particularly like is that Holloway's is a small local business with the feel of a family run business due to the closeness of the team. We are an eclectic group of people, some more quirky than others which makes for an interesting and friendly working environment, one that works extremely well. The extensive knowledge of the antique and fine art world of Holloway's valuers and auctioneers never fails to impress me and it is this knowledge and skill that has put our 'local business' on a worldwide map.

I have been at Holloway’s for 15 interesting years, having previously been PA to the Managing Director of a large international German engineering firm.

The antique business is fascinating and varied. I literally learn something new every day. It is great meeting the wide variety of people who visit Holloway's during our valuation days and of course at the sales, the culmination of all our labours, which are really exciting, fascinating and unpredictable.

Cynthia Covacic

I have been working at Holloway’s for over 20 years, prior to this I worked as a Legal Secretary, mainly dealing with Conveyancing, Wills and Probate.

In my years at Holloway’s I have seen many changes, but I never cease to be amazed at the unusual and wonderful items that are brought in sometimes just for valuation, or to be put into auction. Sale days are always action packed and exciting.
