Our sale of more than 350 pictures from the stock of St. James's dealer Julian Hartnoll proved to be a great success overall, with some notable individual results. Among the latter were lot 315, an enormous figurative canvas by John Bratby which sold for £23,000, and lot 321, an important oil on board by Edward Middleditch entitled 'Crowd, Earls Court', which made £19,000 and is understood to have been bought on behalf of an English institution.
Many of Bratby's smaller drawings
of Venice and Paris went to private collectors who took
advantage of the opportunity to buy ready-to-hang works at
prices which were often roughly equivalent to their
cost.
Buyers - and indeed the press -
particularly appreciated Holloway's decision to bear the
Artist's Resale Right payments, newly-extended to include
artists who have died with the last 70 years and therefore of
some significance in this sale.
